What is Polyethersulfone?

Polyethersulfone(PES) is a kind of high-performance polymer, usually known as an amorphous material. Developed by ICI UK in 1972, PES resin is a thermoplastic high polymer with comprehensive properties, which is one of few special engineering mater plastic with a wide range of applications. 

As a kind of thermoplastic polymers, PES resin has great heat resistant, physical, mechanical, and insulation performance. In particular, its outstanding advantages like stable property can still be retained even though it is continuously used at high temperature and under the circumstance of more rapid temperature change. That’s why PES resin is so widely used in various industries nowadays.

Properties of Polyethersulfone(PES)

 
Heat Resistance
 
The heat deformation temperature of Polyethersulfone(PES) plastic material is 220℃ below 200℃; continuous use temperature is 200℃ below 180℃; UL temperature index is 180℃. Polyethersulfone(PES) can be used for up to 20 years at 180℃.
 
Hydrolysis Resistance
 
Polyethersulfone(PES) resin can resist the hot water or stream of 160℃ below 150℃. Even though under high temperature, it won’t erode by acid and base.
 
Dependence of Mold Temperature
 
The modulus of Polyethersulfone(PES) resin almost remain the same at 200℃ below -100℃. Polyethersulfone(PES) resin is better than any kinds of thermoplastic resin at the temperature over 100℃
 
Creep Resistance
 
Polyethersulfone(PES) resin has the best creep resistance among all thermoplastic resin at the temperature below 180℃. Particularly, glass fiber modified enhanced Polyethersulfone(PES) resin has better creep resistance than some thermosetting resin.
 
Dimensional Stability
 
Polyethersulfone(PES) resin is characterized by low coefficient of linear expansion and temperature reliability. Especially the 30% glass fiber enhanced Polyethersulfone(PES) resin only has a coefficient of linear expansion of 2.3×10-5 /℃, which can be retained a similar index of aluminum until 200℃.
 
Flame Retardant
 
Polyethersulfone(PES) resin can stand oil like gasoline, engine oil and lubricating oil and the detergent like Freon. It has the best resistance to solvent cracking among the amorphous resin but is not so good at standing the polar solvent like acetone and trichloromethane.
 
Non-toxicity
 
Polyethersulfone(PES) plastic material is approved by FDA, and also meets the requirements of No.434 and No.178 announcement of JMHW.
 
Flame Retardant
 
Polyethersulfone(PES) plastic material has great self-extinguishment even without adding any flame retardant, which can be up to UL94V-0 grade.
 
Impact Resistance
 
Polyethersulfone(PES) material has high strength and has the same impact resistance as polycarbonate. Non-reinforced Polyethersulfone(PES) resin is available in riveting but it is susceptible to the tapering cut.
 
Chemical Resistance
 
Polyethersulfone(PES) material has excellent resistance to the chemicals like acids, alcohols, alkalis, aromatic hydrocarbons, greases and oils, and halogens.
 
Good Electrical Property
 
Polyethersulfone(PES) material has outstanding insulating performance with the dielectric strength of 16 kV.mm-1, which makes it ideal for the industry of electronics and electrical devices.
 
Great Mechanical Property
 
Polyethersulfone(PES) material is made to be highly abrasion resistance, high hardness, impact and tensile strength, which makes it a practical plastic material for injection mold, car parts, aerospace, food-processing devices, etc.
