Everything About PES Plastic Material You Should Know

PES stands for polyethersulfone, a plastic material developed by the ICI company in 1972. It is a transparent amber resin granule. PES plastic material has become the best engineering thermoplastic resin nowadays, widely used in various industries. As a professional manufacturer of PES plastic material, we will bring you a detailed introduction of PES resin.

  • There are two production routes of PES - the bisphenol route and the monophenol route.
The two routes are nucleophilic high-temperature displacement reaction, adding a solid base during polymerization, and using a high-boiling inert solvent.
  • Since there are no ester-like units in the molecular structure of polyethersulfone, PES plastic material has excellent thermal properties and oxidative stability. It has been confirmed by UL that the continuous use temperature of polyethersulfone is 180 °C, and it meets the requirements of UL94V-0 flame retardant. Polyethersulfone resin is resistant to stress cracking and is insoluble in polar solvents such as ketones and some halogenated hydrocarbons. Moreover, PES material is resistant to hydrolysis, acids, alkalis, lipid hydrocarbons, alcohols, oils, and fats. The performance of PES polymer can be improved by controlling its molecular weight or adding various reinforcing materials and various fibers. The PES resin meets the requirements of the US FDA and can be used for parts in contact with food.
  • Although polyethersulfone is a high-temperature engineering thermoplastic resin, it can still be processed according to conventional thermoplastic processing techniques, such as injection molding, extrusion molding, blow molding, compression molding, or vacuum molding. High mold temperatures help molding and reduce molding-induced stress. Generally, the injection molding temperature is 310-390°C, and the mold temperature is 140-180°C. PES plastic material is an amorphous resin with low mold shrinkage, which can be processed into products with high tolerance requirements and thin walls.

  • Typical modified PES plastic resins include glass fiber reinforced and carbon fiber modified conductive resins.

Application

Polyethersulfone resin has unique design properties, including high mechanical properties in a wide temperature range (-100~200℃); high heat distortion temperature and good heat aging resistance; long-term use temperature up to 180℃; good weather resistance of PES plastic products; flame retardant and low-smoke density; good electrical properties; transparency, etc. Therefore, PES plastic material is widely used in electrical, electronic, mechanical, medical, food, and aerospace.

Electrical & Electronic

The main application products of PES plastic material in electrical and electronic include coil bobbins, contactors, printed circuit boards with two-dimensional and three-dimensional spatial structures, switch parts, lamp holder bases, battery, and battery housings, capacitor thin molds, etc. Since the long-term use temperature of PES plastic material is up to 180 °C, PES resin is a UL94V-0 grade material with high dimensional stability and good electrical insulation properties. Therefore, PES material becomes the first choice for electrical engineering structural materials.

Machinery

Glass fiber reinforced PES resin are mainly used in machinery, and the parts made from PES plastic material have excellent creep resistance, hardness, and dimensional stability. In particular, PES polymer is suitable for making bearing brackets and shells of mechanical parts.

Automotive

PES plastic material can be used to make reflective parts for car lighting lamps, which have a peak temperature of 200℃, and the aluminum alloy reflective parts of cars. Besides, PES plastic material can be made into other automotive parts, such as electrical connectors, electronic, electro-mechanical control components, seats, windows, masks, water pumps, and oil pumps.

Aerospace

PES resins can be used in aircraft interior parts, including brackets, doors, windows, etc., to improve safety. Polyethersulfone resin has excellent transmittance to radar rays, and it has been used for radomes to replace the epoxy parts in the past.

Medical

PES plastic material can be used as a medical-grade polymer for the parts like forceps, hoods, operating room lighting components, handles for centrifugal pumps, surgical devices, water heaters, hot water pipes, thermometers, etc. These PES medical parts are highly resistant to hydrolysis and sterilizing solvents and meet medical standards.

Kitchenware

PES resin can also be made into the coffee maker, egg cooker, microwave, hot water pump, etc.

Lighting

PES polymer is an ideal plastic material for lighting and optics, and products include reflectors, signal lights, etc. The PES lighting parts are transparent, UV stable, and can be used outdoors for a long time.

Membrane

PES plastic material can be m into various ultrafiltration membranes, permeation membranes, reverse osmosis membranes, and mesoporous fibers with high mechanical strength by solvent technology.

Coating

PES plastic material is a kind of amorphous resin, and it can be used as a coating material for metal surfaces.
