What are PES Resin Features and Applications?

Polyethersulfone or PES resin is a high-performance, amorphous and transparent resin, belonging to the class of materials called polysulfone. In essence, this is a family of thermoplastic polymers known for comprehensive properties like superior heat resistance, terrific mechanical and chemical properties, etc. PES resin is available in different sizes. What are the Features of PES Resin?

Superior heat resistance

Among every one of the materials belonging to the polysulfone family, PES performs the most superbly when it comes to rigidity and resistance to heat. Your PES resin will never start deforming until it reaches a temperature of 203 degrees Celsius. A glass transition temperature of over 220 degrees Celsius and a 180 degrees celsius UL temperature further reinforces its position as the right material for demanding processes in terms of temperature.

That’s not all. For continuous use, the temperature range from, 180 to 200 degrees Celsius. And you can always be sure of no change in structure and mechanical property even at 200 degrees Celsius.

Resistance to high impact

In the absence of notches, PES offers you similar impact resistance as other polymers like polycarbonate. Otherwise, the impact resistance of PES resin may vary depending on the notch radius. In a case where the notch has a large radius, the impact resistance follows suit and rises as well, and vice versa. This is due to its negligible notch sensitivity.

Excellent mechanical performance

Compared to other thermoplastics, it is difficult to pinpoint a material with greater mechanical properties than PES. Its tensile strength of 84.3MPa with 2.65GPa elastic modulus are top figures for a thermoplastic material. Further, it has a notch impact strength of over 90j/m with a breaking elongation of up to 6% to cap it all up.  

Resistance to hydrolysis and chemicals

This material features bonds of thermal, oxidative, and hydrolysis stability. In essence, PES is perfect for applications that require resistance to hot water. It does well for water between 150 to 165 degrees Celsius. Besides, you can be sure that neither acids nor basic chemicals can erode it. This resistance extends to grease, oils, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and several other chemicals.

Applications of PES

Polyethersulfone has gained considerable traction with applications spanning automotive, electrical and electronics, medical, and commercial membrane fabrications.

It has been able to replace thermostats in the automotive industry. PES in Automotives enjoy applications such as creating components of transmission parts, pistons, battery caps, oil pumps, headlights, screens, and several others.

The electrical and electronic sector also leverages its superior heat resistance feature to create lamp holders and shades, sensors, battery seals, cool formers, ovens, projectors, and several others.
